US Stock Trading Markets
The US stock market consists of three major exchanges:
New York Stock Exchange (NYSE): Known as the NYSE it is the oldest, largest, and most renowned securities market in the US with over 300 years of history. The NYSE has approximately 2,800 listed companies, covering a wide range of industries, including finance, traditional industries, and retail. It has a global market value of $15 trillion.
NASDAQ Stock Market: Referred to as Nasdaq it is an electronic securities exchange and the second-largest in terms of market capitalization. It once surpassed the NYSE in trading volume. Nasdaq is an electronic network-based market with around 5,400 listed companies, predominantly high-tech firms. It is the largest electronic stock trading market in the US and globally.
American Stock Exchange (AMEX): Known as the AMEX it is the only exchange that simultaneously trades stocks, options, and derivatives. It lists primarily mid-sized companies, and its ETF trading is highly active. Currently the third-largest stock exchange in the US, AMEX focuses on overlooked mid-cap companies, providing various services to increase their visibility.
